GRAPE HARVEST FESTIVAL IN LOGROÑO
Yes, we continue proposing activities to make your stay in La Rioja unforgettable and for this post we are going to talk about the grape harvest festival in Haro.
We always tell you that distances in La Rioja are short, especially for those who live in big cities, where traveling a few kilometers becomes an odyssey. We remind you that from Haro to Logroño it only takes 30-35 minutes by car.
In September, coinciding with the grape harvest, Logroño celebrates the grape harvest festivities, receiving a large number of visitors. The central day of the celebration is September 21, the day of San Mateo, but throughout the week we will find all kinds of events related to the world of wine.
After the typical proclamation from the town hall, the chupinazo takes place, which inaugurates the festival. On the second day of celebrations, in the Plaza del Espolón, the grapes are trodden by locals duly dressed in traditional costumes, and the grapes are placed in the vat, where they are trodden. All you have to do is roll up your pants, take off your shoes and “stomp”.
Throughout the week the streets of Logroño take on a special life, where music, dances and popular food are the protagonists and delight visitors. The different peñas are crowned as the main actors in the organization of many of the events while the regional houses become disseminators of the customs and typical dishes of their region.
One of the most popular events comes with the parade of floats, decorated with elements related to wine, looking for the prize for the best thematic decoration.
And the end of the festivities is the burning of the vat that will burn in a very crowded Town Hall square. Many of the visitors usually repeat these days in other years due to the authenticity of these festivities and the good atmosphere that is lived in them.
